Dean Spade on Prison Abolition and Anti-Transgender Violence, and FIERCE Radicalizes the Creating Change Conference PDF Print E-mail
Tuesday, 31 January 2012 14:01

Listen here to this week's show.

On this week's show we discuss anti-transgender hate crimes, prison abolition, and alternative models of justice with Dean Spade and Eric Stanley. We will also report on LGBT youth of color activist group FIERCE's attempts to radicalize the agenda at last weekend's Creating Change conference.

First, we hear an interview with Dean Spade about the epidemic of violence against trans and gender nonconforming people and discuss responses to that violence beyond hate crimes legislation.

Then we hear an excerpt from a Romantic Friendship Radio conversation about prison abolition and alternative models of justice with Dean Spade, Eric Stanley, Reina Gossett, and Sashay aka Sasha Wortzel.

We also took listener calls about these provocative critiques.

We end the show with a dispatch from the 2012 Creating Change Conference. First, the Obama Administration's Secretary of Housing and Urban Development announces new federal regulations prohibiting discrimination against LGBT people. Then, queer youth of color activists from FIERCE try to radicalize the agenda at a discussion with representatives from the Obama administration, accusing them of pinkwashing their overall conservative policy record.

Former Black Panther Ericka Huggins Singer Songwriter Janis Ian J. Edgar Hoover

Last November, the movie “J. Edgar,” starring Leonardo DiCaprio, was released. The film purports to portray the life of J. Edgar Hoover, the founding director of what later became the FBI, which he ruled for 5 decades until his death in 1972. The portrayal selects certain sordid chapters from Hoover’s life, such as his secret surveillance of high-level Democratic Party politicians, persecution of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., and his downplaying of the role of organized crime, but also spends a large amount of time exploring his homoerotic relationship with his chosen second-in-command, Clyde Tolson, and his strange Mama’s boy relationship with his mother. The film’s box office take has exceeded $50 million, but reviews have
